Period 1's Featured Book: Ghosts by Raina Telgemeier

Recommendation for Ghosts

Coast side town Bahia de la Luna is welcoming new residents when Catrina (Cat) and her family move from Southern California up north for the benefit of her little sister, Maya, who has cystic fibrosis. As the sisters explore their new home, they find out that Bahia de la Luna is not what it seems when their neighbor tells them that there are ghosts in this unusual town. This entices Maya, who is eager to meet one, but superstitious and protective Cat wants to stay away from them at all costs. Day of the Dead is approaching at light speed, and Cat has to learn the importance of courage and open mindedness to understand the true meaning of family.

Ghosts is a wonderful book about 2 sisters who bond by helping each other through hard times and scary moments. The characters are really relatable, which makes this book such a pleasure to read as they develop and grow. If you like heartwarming stories, mysteries, and humor, you are guaranteed to enjoy Ghosts! Out of 5 stars, I rate this book 5 stars! -- Sophie

Period 2's Featured Book: Coraline, Neil Gaiman

Recommendation for Coraline

Coraline is a dark fantasy book by Neil Gaiman, we follow Coraline moving into her new apartment complex called the pink palace. With her parents only focused on their work, she wanders around the complex in an attempt to keep her boredom at bay. Along the way she finds her eccentric neighbors, an outdoor cat and most importantly a small, peculiar door. One night she is drawn to it and finds that there is a whole different world on the other side. Everything seems better, the food, her ‘other parents’, the neighbors, but it feels off. The people in this new strange world all have buttons instead of eyes.

This book instantly will suck you in, it's not too scary but the right amount for this halloween season. I recommend it to anyone who wants something new and different to read, because personally I don't know a book that comes near this one. Coraline is a fantastic book, the fast moving plot and carefully crafted characters are sure to get you hooked! I recommend reading the actual book but if you prefer there is a graphic novel and movie available.

Personally my favorite part of the book is its mysterious feel, it makes you want to read the whole book in a single sitting. Seeing how things are different and yet the same in the other world is something really fascinating. -- Numia

His books were crosses between genres, defying others thoughts of staying within the genre. He has fans that are attracted to his Sci-Fi and Fantasy novels along with his other books. His books appeal to not only young readers, but also adults. With his books made into movies, it’s enjoyable for everyone.

Coraline, PG (2009)

The movie Coraline is one of a kind. The animation is creepy and dark, but in a good way. It can visually show the little detail in everything and makes you feel like you are inside of the movie. One of my favorite parts of the movie is the beginning. The intro, when an anonymous person is creating a Coraline doll from an old doll to add the names of the people who worked on the movie. When all the names were finished he threw the doll he made out the window. I think that is one of the many creative parts in the movie.

The moral that I get from this movie is that you don't know how lucky you are to have something until you lose it.i also understand that you should organize your time and know that a perfect life might not always be good. I say this because Coraline had perfect parents in another dimension, but they were fake. And in the real dimension, she had messy parents and not all perfect, but they loved her very much. The parents soon noticed that they didn't spend enough time with their daughter since they were always working. Behind all the creepy stuff is a really good moral. This is why I really like this movie and recommend it to anyone who enjoys watching spooky and fun movies. -- Steffany

Period 4's Featured Book: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, by J. K. Rowling

Recommendation for Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, the first book out of a series of 7. I absolutely love it! The amount of adventure, the way you can see Hogwarts in your mind while reading! Everything comes alive in your mind and makes it impossible to want to stop reading. From when you first read about the characters to the end where they save the students, families, and staff from getting a lifelong torcher from “you know who”. The way Rowling brings the story alive is different from any other book I've ever read.

When Harry, Ron, and Hermione first meet at the Hogwarts express, Ron and Harry become good friends but aren't that into Hermione just yet. Ron calls her all these names but they all come to like each other. People refer to them as the Golden Trio, which may be easier to understand later in the books. I just can't express how much I love these stories. The way it all just comes to life in your mind is just unbelievable. After reading these books, every September 1st will now be the day you would get to go home to where you wish you could be. It's so unreal that people even think that there is no way Hogwarts isn't real.

This book is about Harry’s first time going to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It all just comes so quickly to him. One morning he wakes up to a letter from Hogwarts. Then from there it gets pretty crazy. He has to live with his aunt, uncle, and cousin because his parents had been murdered by “you know who”. After they died, he for some reason could not kill Harry, so he was trying to figure out a way to get Harry dead. When Hagrid picks up Harry and takes him to Diagon Alley, his adventure begins. From when Harry buys his wand at Ollivander's to when he meets Ron before entering Platform 9 ¾ to when they become friends with Hermione to the time where they have to leave Hogwarts. When they get off the train and get to Hogwarts, they have to get sorted into their houses. Either Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, or Hufflepuff. It's all just too good. Just for Harry’s first year, they do so many things to save themselves (especially Harry) and Hogwarts from “you know who”. The 3 of them sacrifice their lives to adventure into and save Hogwarts. They introduce not only Hagrid, Harry, Hermione, and Ron, but you read about others like Draco, Neville, Dumbledore, Snape, and some others who maybe aren't that innocent after all. Heads up, Snape isn’t the nicest character ever, for now. For a good amount of the book, Harry and Ron weren’t even really best friends with Hermione yet, until they saved her life of course. The story just keeps unfolding while they introduce more characters and face challenges, achievements, adventures, and of course, great times. When Harry sees himself in the mirror of Erised with his parents and when he has to kill Professor Quirrell. Harry's life is forever changed after he came to Hogwarts. This school is their home.

There is just so much to explain and so much to enjoy that it is impossible to fit it into these paragraphs. Everything is just unreal. Before I read these books I thought, “Oh how good could these books really be?” But now, I am in love with this series. Of course, I give it a 100/5 stars. Even if you feel you might not like the book, still read it. You never know if you will change your mind like I did. And after reading this book, if you think it’s amazing, just wait until you read the rest of them. Also make sure to watch the movies and decide which one is better. After watching the movies, you might get a little crush on some of the characters too. -- Erin
